Once upon a time T.S., an industrious 5th year student of Beeslack High created the Penicuik Cuckoo….
The Penicuik Cuckoo is Penicuik’s first online and in print newspaper. It was formed in January 2012 by Thomas Scott. It is run by a group of locals, all of which are volunteers.
The newsreel became only virtual eventually, and, due to the student moving on, it will discontinue all together soon . However, a large bunch of the printed version is waiting to be recycled into making the paper town Penicuik beautiful, and here is the plan:
Stage 2 is the painting of the roses so that the paper does not wilt away, but can dry swiftly. We have tried to paint the paper first (before rolling the rose), and that version looks really nice, but it ain’t practical, because of the drying involved in terms of space for the dripping sheets!
It is now in the hands of the pupils to carve out time and space in their lunch clubs to make Penicuik paper rose proud, in a secret, soon to be revealed shop window.
The last weeks have been time for exploring what could be done with little resources and lots ingenuity for maximum impact.
We seen Mary’s Pompom Maker last time and meanwhile one lassie keen to recycle old yarns got herself one too, and shared it quite successfully with Rory
Granny bunting inspiration from Attic 24 and Yarndalehas been the inspiration for Julia’s rainbow bunting last year, remember?
If we get all of our friends and family involved, what might we get up to? Just imagine…..!!
“The photo below was taken at the 2011 knit and stitch show at Alexandra Palace and was part of the Woman’s Weekly Centenary year celebrations attempt to break the world record for the longest line of bunting ever made (8,982ft!).” (click on photo to read more)
Now, what is YOU can do to
???
Well, I am off to do some more research on the Cuckoo theme. How can we create a pattern and for which crafty medium? Come back soon to see what I found. And why not subscribe to this blog to get update alerts?
Cosy round the fire in room 1 in West Street, in late January the four of the PCAA core team gathered to compare crafty notes and share ideas and tea and bikkies (Di, you ARE a star!)
and Mary’s pompom making gadget is actually super cool!
Hey, and I just found the gadget on ebay – check this out here! Very tempting, must say, as it does save time and makes it easier to create neat pompoms !
Di’s pattern findings for knitted bunting are uploaded, too, for triangular ones, either starting at the tip, or starting at the top, and can be found here.
See more images from this afternoon and come and see next week of Baskets full of yarn waiting for you to try out one or the other of this very simple and straight forward street decoration creating. And as a by-product discover the relaxation and satisfaction creating such simple collaborative things brings! At home you can do it whilst helping your kids with the homework, or watching TV, and of course whilst listening to the radio – or simple when enjoying some peace and quiet.
If you have any spare yarn – drop it off in the Gallery Cafe (open Monday – Saturday, 10am – 4pm) marked “For Brightening Penicuik”.
Next on the agenda: who feels like fielding through our fabric/cloth stash and design a sewn bunting, recycling it? Sewing bunting seems a good idea, don’t you think? Found a free sewing bunting tutorial and template here.
Anyone here who can teach a sewing bunting session? Including sewing for beginners? (how to do bobbins and how to do fancy stitches?) Please get in touch and we could arrange a skill share session. 😉
Any spare sewing machines anywhere?
Brightening Penicuik is a fabulous opportunity to brush up your skills, as well as learn and practise new skills, AND to recycle your stash!
